A web site, by its nature, is a passive
marketing tool. It relies on people to come to it. What if you
could take your web site to people instead of waiting for them
to come to you?
RSS and WAP are two types of programming that allow you to make
your web site content available to people "outside the browser".
And OWT can do both for you.
RSS feeds
make your content available on other people's web sites and in
RSS newsreader software via XML programming. It's most
commonly used to syndicate news content. If you've ever seen web
sites that
advertise "Place our headlines on your web site", they're
probably doing that via RSS.
If you have any content on your site using our News or
any of our database tools this
content can be made available via a
RSS feed. A great deal of dynamic content on the Internet is
available via RSS feeds and there are many client programs
that can support
RSS. This can be a great way of sharing frequently updated
data with
your most interested customers.
We can also make any of your OWT database-driven
content available via XML.
Many software packages prefer to interact with
external content via an XML interface and OWT
can work with that by either reading or writing
XML data to your specifications.
External RSS Feeds
If you want to include RSS/XML feeds from another
source as part of your web site content, OWT can
do that, too! External feeds can be checked and
updated hourly as the content on the external
site changes. It's a great way to provide valuable,
3rd-party content that interests your site visitors!
Samples / Examples
The OWT Information
Sheets are a good example of the use of RSS
feeds to build site content. Also, our OWTWeb
news system is available as
an RSS feed.
