Google's Big Daddy

You know that search engines are regularly changing the way they rank web pages. You know that the SERPs of your favorite search engines can look different from minute-to-minute, day-to-day, and month-to-month. How would you like to know what Google's SERPs are going to look like in a couple months? You can, by using this Google data center:

Google Guy Matt Cutts recently announced the "Bigdaddy" data center on his blog. Matt specifically says this is where Google has been testing out a new "infrastructure", with changes "under the hood" that an average user may never notice. But I do notice some new SERPs, and Matt says he expects this data center to go live in "1-2 months." He's using his blog to solicit feedback, so use the link below to read his post if you want to know how to comment on what you see. Pretty amazing -- I can't ever recall regular searchers being given a sneak peek of future SERP changes like this.

In The News

Designing for the web

This'll be mostly old news to the experienced web developers reading right now, but if you're not-so-experienced or maybe just want a refresher on some web design basics -- resolution issues, color issues, fonts, GIF vs JPG, and so forth, check out Joshua David McClurg-Genevese's article this week at Digital Web Magazine.

Designing for the web

Saying 'Yes'

I usually refer to it in terms of building trust -- your web site has to earn a visitor's trust before that visitor will convert to a customer. Nick Usborne puts it in terms of getting visitor's to say "Yes", and expands on the idea very well in his latest article on Excess Voice.

This Week's Q&A

Matt,

I have some domains I'm interested in selling. Where's the best place to do that? Is it eBay? Thanks in advance.

Dave

Hi Dave,

There are all kinds of places that handle domain sales, domain auctions, and even discussion of domain sales and auctions. Here are some:

http://www.afternic.com/
http://www.sedo.com/
http://www.dnforum.com/
http://www.domainstate.com/
http://www.namepros.com/

It's been forever since I've paid much attention to domain buying and selling, so I don't know if any one of those is better than the next. Sorry I can't help more.
