PPC Options Galore
In answer to the question "How do you increase
online visibility in 2006?", one of the main
recommendations from our SEO in 2006 series is
advertising. Most online businesses -- especially
new ones -- need to consider pay-per-click advertising
as part of an overall marketing effort to increase
visibility and acquire traffic.
Google's AdWords program has been the leader in
this field for a few years now, with Yahoo running
behind a bit and MSN not even playing the game.
But the landscape is changing and pretty soon
all three major SEs will be offering their own
unique advertising programs.
Late last week, MSN launched AdCenter, which will
power the paid ads that appear on their SERPs.
MSN had been using Yahoo ads for some time before
the announcement. And then early this week, Yahoo
announced an upgrade of Yahoo Search Marketing,
the program that controls paid ads on their SERPs.
MSN AdCenter is open now and anyone can sign up.
Yahoo's upgrade is underway this week, but will
be phased in with new features and advertising
tools being added over the next few months. The
Yahoo upgrade will include, for example, the ability
to target ads geographically (which Google already
offers).
Ultimately, this is good for you and anyone that
has a business web site. If you find your web
site isn't ranking well in one of the SEs, now
you can sponsor some search terms and pay for
visibility. The more opportunity to reach wider
audiences, the better.

In The News
SEW comes to Seattle
If the big search engine conferences are either
too far away, too costly, or just not convenient
for you to attend, here's an option for those
of us in the Pacific Northwest: Search Engine
Watch is putting on a one-day workshop in Seattle.
It'll happen next Friday, May 19th, from 12:30
pm to 5:00 pm at the Hotel Monaco. Cost is reasonable
at just $75 (or $100 at the door). You can learn
more about the speakers and topics at the link
below. I'll be there, and looking forward to it!

WebDev cheat sheets
I know I've linked before to Pete Freitag's web
developer cheat sheets, but it was a long time
ago when I think he had maybe 5-10 cheat sheets
posted. Now he's up to 30+. Good stuff for the
developer -- quick access to codes and hints you
might use in any given project.
