Natural Link Building
You've probably read it here in Net Gains, or
maybe somewhere else in SEM/SEO circles -- by
"it" I'm referring to the need to build
links naturally. Or maybe I should say, the need
to make it look like you're building links naturally.
What you don't want to do is launch a new site
and suddenly have 500 inbound links by the 5th
day. That's unnatural, and is a red flag to search
engines (Google, especially) that you're up to
no good.
So, how do you make it look like you're building
links naturally?
A guy named Jim Westergren has just posted a Link
Building Guide which is getting a nice amount
of attention (and links!) in the web marketing
community, including here in Net Gains. The first
section of the guide offers a bullet list of guidelines
for what natural link building looks like.
Then the rest of the article, in my opinion, gets
a bit dodgy because Jim is essentially advertising
some unnatural link building schemes that all
search engines frown on and penalize you if discovered.
So have a grain of salt handy for the "Your
Link Profile" section.

Building Guide

Yahoo Search Help Expands
Here's some good "Yahoo 101" help material
straight from the horse's mouth. Yahoo has updated
and expanded its "Search Help" pages
with a lot -- and I mean a lot -- of Q&A about
how Yahoo Search works, how it crawls and indexes
web pages, and even a tiny little bit on how it
ranks pages. There's a lot here to chew on, especially
if you're still in the learning phase and trying
to figure best practices.

Yahoo Updates MyWeb
Speaking of Yahoo, more evidence of their focus
on personalized and social search -- the MyWeb
area has been re-launched with a variety of updates.
Read the Search Engine Watch article below for
an overview of what's included.

AdWords Editor for Offline Use
If you advertise via Google AdWords, you might
want to check out the new AdWords Editor -- software
that lets you manage your account offline and
then upload changes next time you're online. I
imagine this would be most helpful to those of
you with larger and more complex AdWords accounts.
The couple accounts I manage are easy enough to
manage right through the AdWords web site.
