Most search engines now include "link popularity" as
a factor in determining how highly to list a site in its search
results. The importance of link popularity varies with each search
engine, but the basic premise is that (almost) every link to your
web site is an endorsement of your site's quality, and the more
endorsements
you have, the higher your site is likely to be listed. (All other
things being equal, of course....)
So it's obviously important to get other web sites to link to
yours. That sounds easier than it is, because
a) you don't want just
any site
linking to you, and
b) some links are better than others.
Many search engines use a search
algorithm which analyzes the quality
of the site linking to you.
You want: many quality sites linking
to you, preferably outside of a link trade.
